The latest summer blockbuster, Crazy Rich Asians is more than just your average romantic-comedy movie. Why? There’s a greater, deeper meaning behind this film that grossed more than 45 million dollars worldwide. It is has become a norm that Hollywood movies will star Americans, literally, not asian Americans per se.

This movie features a mostly Asian cast, set in our lion city Singapore, based on local author Kevin Kwan’s best-selling novel Crazy Rich Asians.

We’ve watched it. But K-pop star Eric Nam and his brothers took things one step higher. He bought out a full showing of the movie in Atlanta. We have never seen Asian faces on the silver screens much, at least for Hollywood movies after The Joy Luck Club, which was 25 years ago.

Recent interviews with director Jon M. Chu and cast like Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh, Awkwafina and more revealed that it has come to a point where they realised Asians are being kept under and misrepresented in mainstream media. It is hoped that through this film, it would actually allow Americans to open up towards Asians and change up the mindset in America about the prevailing idea on Asians.

We reckoned that Eric Nam was supportive of this whole movement. Being an asian American himself borned in Atlanta, United States, he must have faced the same problems as most asian Americans would and thus he recently went on Instagram to share the good news with fellows that he has bought out the showing for the movie.
